Dr Craig Brownlie - MBBS FRACS(Ortho) FAOrthA
Dr Craig Brownlie is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon with a strong clinical focus on shoulder pathology, as well as knee and hip surgery. He has a particular interest in the management of shoulder conditions, including joint replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability surgery, and the treatment of sporting injuries.
Dr Brownlie is committed to delivering contemporary, evidence-based care and utilises advanced surgical techniques where appropriate. He is one of a limited number of surgeons nationally offering MAKO robotic-assisted shoulder replacement, allowing for detailed pre-operative planning and patient-specific implant positioning tailored to each patient's anatomy. He is proud to provide this level of specialised shoulder care within a regional setting.
Dr Brownlie prides himself on his clinical practice, contribution to research, and commitment to the ongoing education of junior clinicians and orthopaedic surgical trainees.
He enjoys taking the time to get to know his patients and understand their individual treatment goals. Dr Brownlie aims to actively involve patients in the decision-making process, with a strong emphasis on restoring function and supporting return to lifestyle and activity.
Originally from Mungindi and schooled locally in Toowoomba, Dr Brownlie completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Queensland in 2008. He subsequently specialised in orthopaedic surgery, completing his training in Perth, Western Australia.
Dr Brownlie undertook two fellowships at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The first focused on complex knee and hip joint replacement surgery. He then completed a second fellowship dedicated to all aspects of shoulder surgery, with particular emphasis on arthroscopic management of rotator cuff tears, shoulder stabilisation and shoulder replacement.
He continued his shoulder sub-specialty training with a further fellowship at the Royal London Hospital, one of Londons Major Trauma Centres. Working as part of the upper limb team in both acute trauma and elective settings, Dr Brownlie gained extensive experience across the full spectrum of upper limb surgery, including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand surgery.
Dr Brownlie consults privately from his rooms at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital and operates at both St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital and St Vincent's Private Hospital Toowoomba. He has previously held the position of Director of Training for Orthopaedic Registrars at Toowoomba Base Hospital, where his role focused on training future orthopaedic surgeons and supporting the delivery of high-quality care for patients across Toowoomba and surrounding regions.
Outside of his surgical practice, Dr Brownlie enjoys an active lifestyle, including golf and tennis, and spending time with his family.
